What does it mean to be a Registered Dietitian?

Registered Dietitians are food and nutrition experts who have met specific criteria to earn the RD credential:

  • Completed a minimum of a bachelor's degree at a U.S. regionally accredited university or college with course work approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE), of the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
  • Completed an accredited supervised practice program, typically 6 to 12 month in length, or a practice experience combined with undergraduate or graduate studies.
  • Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  • Completed continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration.

Anyone can call themselves a "nutritionist", make sure you get your food and nutrition information from a Registered Dietitian.
